David Walker, president and CEO of The Peter G. Peterson Foundation, served as the U.S. Comptroller General and head of the Government Accountability Office from 1998 to 2008. As the federal government’s chief auditor, Walker was known as an outspoken nonpartisan advocate who addressed the major fiscal challenges facing the country. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton, confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate and served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Now in the private sector, Walker is free to focus on issues he couldn’t during his tenure with the GAO: advocate for specific solutions, work proactively with grantees and other partners to build strong coalitions, and encourage and engage grassroots efforts to bring pressure on Washington to act.
As chairman of the United Nations Independent Audit Advisory Committee, Walker continues to serve as a global accountability expert. He has written two books, is a regular commentator and is the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary “I.O.U.S.A.”
